The Runner
Currently in the form of a wax ready for casting in metal. The image of a collapsed marathon runner being carried away from the Boston marathon finish line in a 2001 newspaper report , captured the essence of the effort that is long distance running.
The clipping sat for many years waiting for time to to be worked on. The sculpture is an assemblage of the image of the runner as a classical nude , eyes closed in exhaustion , head thrown back to the sky, in the pose she had, when supported by race officials who are not depicted. The greyhound represents the race which for her has been run. They float over a cobbled road surface supported by the ribbon of the finishing tape in stainless steel ( for strength and contrast) next to the bronze of the figures.
by the time the modeling work was nearly complete the Boston marathon bombing happened and I inlaid her hair braid with some relevant iconography, (celtic patternwork and evil overcome). In my dream I would have it over lifesize on a pedestal beside the race finish.
This work is awaiting an owner and then we can proceed to casting and finishing. Please call if interested. There is also a plaster of the runner figure alone .
